I can't get a nice loaf of bread!

 

I am a man who don't complain,
About the weather or the rain,
I find it makes no difference anyway;
But I have but one regret,
That I haven't mentioned yet,
It's all about the bread we get today!
I can get myself a nice lobster,
Or a nice broad apron crab,
When I'm a little bit hungry
A nice little herring I've had;
I can get myself a nice mushroom,
To go along with eggs in bed,
I can get myself a nice mother [girlfriend],
But I can't get a nice loaf of bread

In the country or the town, I've been for miles around
To all the local bakers I can see;
But no matter where I go, the answer’s always no,
When I ask them for the bread that used to be.
I can get myself a nice dumpling, or a nice old bramble pie,
Clams, cockles and samphire, and you know I tell no lie,
I can get myself a nice partridge, or a nice old hare instead
I can get myself a nice coffin
But I can't get the nice loaf of bread
(no more you can't).

I’m a discontented man, and I don't quite understand
that's why I put this question up to you:
In the world we live today, can you come to me and say,
Just why they make the bread the way they do.
I can get myself a nice turkey, or a nice old duck as well,
Where there’s chicken and gravy, there's a most exciting smell;
With a pin I can tickle them winkles, but just like I have said
I can get myself a nice funeral,
But I can't get a nice loaf of bread
Now I can't get a nice loaf of bread!
